  • Professor biography

Professor Woontack Woo is a professor at the Graduate School of Culture and Technology (GSCT) at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and is currently the head of the GSCT as well as the CT Research Institute. Since 2016, he is also the director of the KI-ITC AR Research Center. He served as the president of the HCI Society of Korea (2014-2015) and is currently serving as the honorary president. He also has been as vice-presidents of several acadmic societies such as the Korean Game Society (from 2020), the Korean Institute of Next Generation Computing (from 2011), the CG&I Society in the Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Engineers (from 2010), the HCI Society of Korea (present 2008), and the Korea Computer Graphics Society (since 2008). In 1989, he received a BA in Electronics Engineering from Kyungpook National University (Daegu) and a Master in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 1991 from Pohang University of Technology (POSTECH). In 1998, he received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering-Systems from University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, CA, USA. In 1999, he joined Advanced Telecommunications Research (ATR) in Kyoto, Japan, as an Invited Researcher. From February 2001 to February 2012, he served as a professor in the School of Information and Communication (SIC) and the director of the Culture Technology Institute (CTI) at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST). The main thrust of his research is to implement Ubiquitous Virtual Reality(UVR) in smart spaces that include context-aware mediated and augmented reality (CAMAR), 3D vision, spatial interactionand cultural technologies. He coined the term "Ubiquitous VR" and started the UVR Lab at GIST in 2001. Since then he has developed various augmented reality applications such as "DigiLog Books, DigiLog Miniatures and DogiLog Spaces." Recently, he has expanded the field of research to augmented humans/city/society and post-metaverse, and has contributed to the field of virtual augmented reality by publishing more than 400 papers in major journals and conferences.
