Virtual teams expand an organization’s ability to link together
resources separated in space and time. One of the challenges in
managing virtual teams is selecting appropriate team members.
Selection is difficult because assessing applicants is harder because
diagnostic information is lost when there is little face-to-face
contact. In this talk, I will be presenting my research that proposes
and testes a model to explain how assessment methods affect assessment
quality and team member turnover. In this research, I investigated the
assessment process through observation and surveys of virtual teams in
World of Warcraft, a virtual world that engages millions of highly
motivated, active participants. I’ll also briefly introduce my
previous and future research of human behavior in virtual worlds.
