Title:
Introduction to Timbre: Acoustics, Perception and Measurement

Abstract:
Timbre is one of major characteristics of sound, but it is probably the least understood because it is difficult to define. In this presentation, I will introduce timbre and its research from the perspectives of acoustics, perception and measurement. These three perspectives are not separate but mutually interactive. For the acoustical perspective, I will present timbre as perceptual indicator of the sound source and its sound-generating action. Research on timbre dissimilarity and blend, as well as auditory scene analysis will be discussed as the perceptual aspect of timbre. Some standard measurements to quantify timbre for various applications and research will also be presented. My current research on timbre salience will also be briefly discussed as one of the new direction in timbre research.
